In the 1900s, civil rights activists were fighting for equal rights for all people, especially African-Americans and women. During this time, African-Americans and women were not given equal opportunities for jobs, buses, and were segregated. Also, they were not paid as much as white men. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination against race and sex for hiring, promotion, and firing.
